Find Your Calling

Reclaim your soul’s calling

Without … initiations that reveal the core gifts of people and begin the healing of the inevitable wounds of life, it remains difficult for (us) to find solid ground on which to meet.

Michael Meade, from The Waters of Life

  • Let go of old self-limiting stories
  • Learn to take healthier, more innovative risks
  • Enthusiastically step into new roles and responsibilities
  • Step more consciously onto your chosen path
  • Evolve into the person you want to be and
  • Claim your destiny in the world

Initiation and rite of passages require us to risk the comforts of what we know in favour of the uncertain and the unknown.

Personal and collective rites of passage initiate us into our soul’s true calling.

Re-write your life stories…

At certain times and ages in life we attempt to change. It is natural to want to become someone or something more, more than other people’s limited perceptions of us. However, either through jealousy, fears or control people who we believe are supposed to love and support us (including family, teachers and friends) can unwittingly sabotage our risk to change and grow. Traditionally, we would each have mentors to guide us through the labyrinth of life’s changes. Yet, when there are no mentors life initiates us into our soul’s journey.

Pain induced by illness, heart-break and betrayal are all symptoms of how life breaks us open in order to evolve. Without guidance however, we often choose judgment over resiliency. In the role of judge, we loose our full ability to respond to challenges designed to help us evolve. We then often divert the pain of these soul-wounding experiences into unhealthy behaviours.

What can this training do to send you on your journey with more wisdom?

Because the past is never really over, with memory and imagination, it is possible to revisit and rewrite our own reactions to the events of our lives. For people willing to take the risk to step into radical self-responsibility this Rites of Passage program assists you to claim your personal authority and more enthusiastically step into your authentic leadership.

How do we heal the memories and wounds of our incomplete initiations?

Using the creative tools of Playback Theatre, light ritual, movements and music, body-centred intelligence and deep reflection, we will identify where we felt derailed in our growth and then ‘time-travel’ to the place of our ‘failed’ initiation.

Playback Theatre is an original form of improvisational theatre in which participants tell real life stories. These stories are ‘played back’ by participants. A hybrid form of theatre, social ritual and archetypal psychology, the Playback process is gentle, moving, insightful and playful. Playback Theatre is, in its essence, a creative portal to access the spirit of our times and the many roles we play within a life.

Playback profoundly deepens participants ‘awakening’ to the dramatic invitation of the present moment. It is an exciting educational and healing tool.

For many this disrupted attempt to leap from one chapter of life to another goes unfinished. For others their hard-won efforts go un-witnessed. The result in both cases is that your life can feel stifled and less fulfilling in your attempt to live the life you dream.

Your destiny, your vocational calling, is to be found locked away in these profoundly moving, and unfinished events. You, your desire and imagination, hold the key; this Rite of Passage program can help you unlock the door to your destiny.

It is possible to complete what was once risked and lost…

This two day training offers participants a rare opportunity to revisit past life-defining moments and complete the task of personal transformation.

Consultation

Sitting around the kitchen table with a steaming mug of tea, a fist full of markers and a big scrap of paper we will envision your special day. Or conversely, we may take a quiet walk along the beach and consider how to best honour the challenges you and your loved ones now face. In confidence, Robert gently and expertly helps guide you to identify and determine the essential nature of the event you want to create.

The Day of the Event

During the event Robert is available to officiate, guide or be of support in whatever capacity serves you and the needs of the day.

Post-event reflection

Often the most challenging time is when everyone has left and gone home. After big events we often find ourselves in a soulful, reflective space. Whether it is the next day, week or month Robert provides the necessary follow through to help you incorporate the insights and memories into the fabric of your ever-changing life in ways that are gentle, meaningful and self affirming.

Healing Illness as a Rite of Passage

The first challenging step in the healing journey begins by asking for help

Illness can be a devastating initiatory journey. Our bodies, the seeming the agent of betrayal, demands we now change or be changed. Our illness leads us deep into a labyrinth of unknown and often frightening challenges. Initially, many people descend into an underworld of confusion and fear, darkness and depression. Like the hero/heroine’s of your own life’s journey, risking life and limb, you must gather your tools and resources to confront the monster known as Disease. Finding the thread that can be your life line back to the life you want is the key to resiliency and health.

Program Description

Through storytelling, gentle activities and interactive tools this life enhancing workshop series explores living with illness from the perspective of a rite of passage, the Journey. Whether over the course of a weekend or as one day per month over the span of five months this program offers tremendous support for you, your loved ones and health practitioners alike.

Healing Illness as a Rite of Passage reframes the deeply personal dilemma of illness out of a medical model of disease that casts people into the very limiting roles of victim and patient. Running in tandem to your allopathic medical regime, your healing process is an active vision quest, an intimate journey that requires individual attention, gentle caring, curiosity and profound nourishment.

The goal of this life-promoting program is to help you regain your personal power and learn to apply it to your specific health needs and over-all well-being. Consider that every rite of passage involves three primary stages:

Separation, Ordeal and Return

1. How does diagnosis initially sever us from the life we once knew?

2. What challenges do we face in our attempt to meet the changes incurred by illness?

3. What and how do we share the hard-won lessons of successfully facing many of our challenges of living with a disease with our wider communities?

Become the change you seek…

Whether as the host of an illness, care-giver or health practitioner Healing Illness as a Rite of Passage supports you to:

· Discover how to navigate the changes illness demands of you and the people in your life

· Learn how to self-advocate

· Claim your personal authority as you heal

· Step into new roles that serve both you and others

· Become a participant researcher in your own healing process

Ultimately, transform your relationship to illness into that of the teacher, the one who guides you to redefine your core values, beliefs and goals -and potentially, help you discover the essence of your life purpose.

Program Objectives

Healing Illness as a Rite of Passage helps you to:

· Practice empathy for yourself and others by honouring the unlived (pre-diagnosed) life, those dreams and goals that now seemed lost as a result of diagnosis

· Refocus and reframe the challenges you face as an on-going process of healing, skill building and wisdom teaching

· Build confidence and develop personal leadership by identifying the skills you learn while facing illness

· Learn how to model the journey of illness and step into a world of life-giving potential. In time, you may become health-promoting guides and leaders, potentially enhancing our culture and society through your own hard-won example.

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment."

~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Rites of Passage Programming

Life is our greatest teacher.

How is life initiating you and/or your organization at this time?

Why Rites of Passage?

In a word: resiliency.

In times of eruption and crisis we need to learn how to bounce back in ways that nourish us and nourish our world.

Our choices shape our world.

As science reveals -all aspects of life are inter-related. What happens out in the world impacts the people we live and work with; it also affects what happens within our own bodies, minds and emotions. Because we live in a relational world, how we react, how we communicate and ultimately what choices we make affect the outcome between success and failure for many.

Life, the Great Initiator, moves faster than our ability to ever catch up to it, perpetually stimulating us to adapt, change and grow. When this becomes overwhelming however, such rapid and unexpected changes can muddy thinking and distort decisive action.

While social, technological and economic progress may superficially connect more of us, the resulting consumer-frenzied life-style often means less time to replenish ourselves and our ideas.

When we feel constantly taxed and tested we can become reactive and lose sight of our core values and beliefs.

Unceasing stress leads to boundary fatigue.

We become vulnerable to more of what we don't want in our lives which makes us even more susceptible to ever increasing levels of stress, overwhelm and exhaustion.

Individually and systemically, depleted boundaries can lead to illness, ‘bullying’ and even suicide.

Sociologically and psychologically, unless we stand up for what we believe in, we become defined by other's internalized and unhealthy forms of social conditioning: greed, physical, emotional or verbal violence, sexism, racism and homophobia to name but a few faces of oppression.

To fight off stressful, sickness-inducing social viruses we need strong, effective social immune systems.

Following the wisdom of our bodies, we sometimes need a good fever to fight off infections. Healthy conflict can provide a necessary fire to burn off unwanted attention.

Re-imagining the role of crisis

Unlike reacting or numbing out to a crisis, the time-honoured initiatory tradition of a Rite of Passage re-frames circumstances and events.

How can a Rites of Passage Program build the fire and passion we need to refocus our intention and actions in order to re-build and re-define ourselves and our organizations?

There are 3 main passages or themes vital to this work: separation, ordeal and re-incorporation.

The crisis sets us out on a path to discover more authentic power relationships and ultimately healthier expressions of leadership. Crisis necessarily leads us out of our comfort zone, separates us from what we know and challenges us to evolve our capacities.

Initiatory processes stimulate us to realize we need help and guidance to discover the more hidden parts of ourselves, and/or organizations. When successful, we grow in capacity: our skills, resources and confidence measurably evolve.

Reincorporation: the Path of Returning

The final step in the initiation is often the most difficult. Here is where many people and organizations falter. People imagine that just because the dilemma is ‘fixed’ life and business can return to normal. This fallacy leads to an even more trying relapse until the initiatory process is fully completed.

A Rite of Passage involves humility, wisdom, and grace. It also requires an expression of gratitude and generosity. The re-incorporation stage asks us to freely give away some of what we have learned, to be in and of service to the communities and organizations to which we belong.

It is by our peers and those who benefit from our efforts that we are authentically witnessed for our challenges and successes. By meeting our challenges head-on we prove we are worthy, valued and valuable members of our communities and society as a whole.

When we choose to face our demons and/or difficulties we embark on a Rite of Passage. We set out on a great quest, an adventure of our soul’s making.

The Now Generation

Like it or not, the whole world, is arguably under the greatest initiation of our collective history. Our global cultural is in a perpetual state of shock. Economically, environmentally, culturally we are all impacted by rapid change. Our choices, our family, our businesses and our organizations depend on us to be and offer much, much more of who we are.

History reveals every generation is defined by its conflicts and struggles. This has also and will always be true of individuals and organizational systems.

Separately and collectively we face challenges few in this generation have been prepared to take. Born of necessity, take them we will.

The axiom change or be changed compels us to act now.

Dramatic times require dramatic, well-rehearsed actions. If you need dramatically different results contact Robert Birch to see how he can be part of your successful team.

Rites of Passage Programs with Robert Birch will refresh, renew and revitalize your skills, values and visions and invite you to more joyfully, more resiliently, play your part in a world that wants and needs you to do so now.
